What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy helps children build the everyday skills they need to take part fully in life, from holding a pencil and using cutlery to managing sensory information and self-care. Signs Your Child May Need Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy can help children who find everyday tasks harder than expected. Families in Islamabad often come to N.E.S.T when a child struggles with buttons, zips, cutlery or handwriting, is very sensitive to sound, touch or movement (or seeks it out constantly), seems clumsy or bumps into things, has trouble sitting still or paying attention, or needs extra help with dressing, feeding or toileting. OT also supports children with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome and developmental delays. An assessment helps us pinpoint exactly which skills to build first.

Our Approach & What a Session Looks Like

After the assessment, your child's occupational therapist writes an individualized plan and chooses the right activities, from sensory-integration play on swings and obstacle courses to fine-motor and self-care practice. A typical session lasts 45-60 minutes and looks like purposeful, motivating play, which keeps children engaged while they build real skills. Parents are coached to continue strategies in daily routines, and we share regular progress updates. Where helpful, occupational therapy is combined with ABA or speech therapy in one coordinated plan.

FAQs

Occupational Therapy FAQs

Answers to common questions from Islamabad families about occupational therapy at N.E.S.T.

What is occupational therapy for children?
Occupational therapy helps children build the everyday skills they need to thrive, including fine-motor control, sensory processing, attention and self-care. At N.E.S.T in Islamabad, licensed occupational therapists use sensory integration, handwriting programs and adaptive strategies to improve independence at home and school.
What are signs my child may need occupational therapy?
Signs include difficulty with buttons, zips, cutlery or handwriting, being over- or under-sensitive to sound, touch or movement, clumsiness, trouble sitting still or focusing, and struggles with dressing, feeding or toileting. An assessment at N.E.S.T can confirm whether occupational therapy will help.
What is sensory processing and sensory integration?
Sensory processing is how the brain takes in and responds to sensations such as sound, touch and movement. When it is out of balance, everyday activities can feel overwhelming. Sensory integration therapy uses purposeful, play-based activities to help a child's nervous system respond more comfortably, so they can focus and participate.
How does occupational therapy help with school?
OT supports school readiness by strengthening fine-motor skills for writing, improving attention and self-regulation, and helping children manage classroom routines and sensory demands. Our OTs often coordinate with teachers so gains carry into the classroom.
What happens in an occupational therapy session?
Sessions usually last 45-60 minutes and look like structured play, using swings, obstacle courses, fine-motor tasks and self-care practice tailored to your child's goals. Parents are coached to continue strategies at home, and N.E.S.T shares regular progress updates.
